Climate Change Democratic Candidate Make Sense?

On the morning of March 1st, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee became the newest democratic candidate running for president. He is touting climate change as “the most urgent challenge of our time.” He hopes that message will propel him into the White House, although at this moment his hopes would appear to be much higher than his chances of moving in.

Now here’s the thing that his doubters may be missing: focusing on climate change could be used as an effective campaign strategy to allow him to break out of the horde of candidates. Here’s my advice on how he could address his 3 major challenges and do just that.

His first challenge is that he is nationally unknown to democrats. Although apolltaken on February 26th, showed him polling only at 0 percent among democratic primary voters, over half of the other candidates were just at 1 percent. By focusing on one unique topic that democrats and independents feel is an important, if not urgent issue, he can begin to climb in voter recognition. Every candidate is given a handle by the media. It’s best to choose that handle first before they apply one. Inslee’s handle will be “the climate change candidate.” It’s not a bad one. And it is one that people will remember. Too many candidates are already running on a multitude of issues. Few people remember the list of issues each candidate is addressing.
